About the Markdown to HTML converter

Paste Markdown and get the HTML it renders to, with a live preview beside it. Handy for pasting a README into a CMS, or checking how a table will come out before you commit it.

Raw HTML in the source is escaped rather than passed through. That is a deliberate choice — the preview renders the result, and running arbitrary markup there would be an injection risk.

What is supported

ATX and Setext headings, ordered and unordered lists with nesting, task list checkboxes, fenced and inline code, blockquotes, horizontal rules, tables with column alignment, images, links and autolinks, bold, italic and strikethrough.

Link targets are checked: only http, https, mailto, tel and relative paths are emitted. A `javascript:` URL is neutralised.

Full document mode

By default you get a fragment — just the rendered elements, ready to paste inside an existing page. Turn on full document mode to wrap it in a doctype, head and body so the file opens standalone in a browser.

Heading anchors

Enabling heading IDs adds a slugified `id` to every heading, which is what makes `#section-name` links work. The slug matches the convention GitHub uses: lowercase, punctuation removed, spaces as hyphens.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my inline HTML escaped?

Because the output is rendered in a live preview. Passing raw markup through would let a pasted document execute script in your browser. Escaping keeps that impossible.

Which Markdown flavour is this?

CommonMark, plus the GitHub extensions people actually use: tables, strikethrough and task lists.

Can I convert a README file?

Yes — drop the .md file onto the input panel.
