About the Color Converter converter

Paste a colour in any common notation and get every other notation back, plus the contrast ratios that decide whether text on it will be readable.

HEX, RGB, RGBA, HSL, HSLA and around thirty CSS colour names are all accepted, with or without an alpha channel.

Which notation to use where

HEX is compact and the default in design tools. RGB maps directly to how a screen emits light. HSL separates hue from saturation and lightness, which makes it far easier to build a consistent palette by hand — nudge the lightness and you have a matching shade.

CMYK is subtractive and meant for print. The conversion here is a naive arithmetic one with no colour profile, so treat it as an approximation and let your printer do the real separation.

Contrast and accessibility

The two contrast ratios show how your colour performs against white and black text. WCAG asks for at least 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text or interface components; 7:1 meets the stricter AAA level.

These numbers are computed from relative luminance exactly as the specification defines it, so they match what an accessibility audit will report.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 8-digit hex have an alpha value?

The last two digits are the alpha channel. #ff000080 is red at roughly 50% opacity.

Are modern CSS colour spaces supported?

Not yet. oklch, lab and color() are on the list — for now, convert to hex in your design tool first.
